In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we'd like to highlight a story with local roots, showcased in the award-winning short film "The 29th Connecticut Regiment and the Fight for Freedom." Produced by the Berlin Equity Action Team (https://buff.ly/3Ozmua4), which includes the organization’s co-founder and USB's Vice President of Digital Channels, Chris Barlow, who is an active volunteer. This 15-minute Civil War documentary, which recently won “Best Connecticut Film” at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival, chronicles the story of The 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry that was created to support Abraham Lincoln's call for more soldiers to help the Union Army defeat the Confederacy. Not only did the 29th Connecticut demonstrate sacrifice and heroism on battlefields in South Carolina and Virginia, but near the end of the war, they were sent to Brownsville, Texas, where they were part of the federal force that occupied that town and brought news of the emancipation of the enslaved — celebrated today as Juneteenth.Of the 11 African-American men in the Regiment from Berlin, Connecticut, three gave their lives in the line of duty; one of them, Sergeant William Morrison, grew up in New Milford. May we remember their story and their sacrifice.Watch the short film for free on YouTube below.

"Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas." On Labor Day, September 4, 1950, General Dwight D. Eisenhower, then President of Columbia University, passionately called for an American Crusade for Freedom in a nationwide radio broadcast from Denver, Colorado, covered by the four major radio networks (ABC, CBS, NBS, and Mutual): "I speak tonight [...] about the Crusade for Freedom. This Crusade is a campaign sponsored by private American citizens to fight the big lie with the big truth. It is a program that has been hailed by President Truman and others as an essential step in getting the case for freedom heard by the world’s multitudes. [...] We need powerful radio stations abroad, operated without government restrictions, to tell in vivid and convincing form about the decency and essential fairness of democracy. These stations must tell of our aspirations for peace, our hatred of war, our support of the United Nations, and our constant readiness to cooperate with all who have these same desires. [...] One such private station, Radio Free Europe, is now in operation in Western Germany. It daily brings a message of hope and encouragement to a small part of the masses of Europe."

Today, we pause and remember how the WWII Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor onDecember 7, 1941 impacted America. We remember the 2,400 service members and civilians who were killed. This day that President Franklin D. Roosevelt names the "Day of Infamy." when he called on Americans to get ready to fight a war. In 1941 the United States was still recovering from the great depression. The unemployment rate was 25%, bankruptcy was not uncommon, and the standard of living for most Americans was 60% lower than before the stock market crash of 1929.America had been avoiding entering the war in Europe. The surprise attack shook the nation, and when Germany and Italy declared war on the United States days later, America found itself in a global war. Sons, husbands, fathers, and sweethearts would join the armed forces. For the next four years, America would experience wage and price controls; shortages of food, fuel, and other strategic materials. American factories were retooled to produce goods to support the war effort and almost overnight. Departing soldiers created a need for 5 million women to entered the wartime workforce in factories and farms. In Delaware County, 35,000 neighbors worked at Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Chester. They were a part of the most ambitious shipbuilding program in American history. They build and launch a ship in just 70 days. By the end of WWII Delco produced 318 vessels, including 288 oil tankers, 35 cargo ships, 35 barges, and eight military vessels. Many organizations honor our WWII veterans. A few include the Delaware County Veterans Memorial Newtown Square , savinghallowedground.org, Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, EDEN CEMETERY in Darby.#Pearlharborremembranceday

I've excerpted a few quotes from this article which has brought tears to my eyes "It is a holiday in which the 🇺🇸nation honors its military dead🕊️."“It struck me that the South was holding out a friendly hand, and that it was our duty, not only as conquerors, but as men and their fellow citizens of the nation, to grasp it.” FinchAnnie ---Memorial Day 🦅 was born out of generous gestures after the Civil War: Southerners decorated graves of Confederate soldiers as well as those of former Union enemies. In the years following the bitter Civil War, a former Union general took a holiday originated by former Confederates and helped spread it across the entire country. The holiday was Memorial Day, an annual commemoration was born in the former Confederate States in 1866 and adopted by the United States in 1868. It is a holiday in which the nation honors its military dead.Gen. John A. Logan, who headed the largest Union veterans’ fraternity at that time, the Grand Army of the Republic, is usually credited as being the originator of the holiday.Yet when General Logan established the holiday, he acknowledged its genesis among the Union’s former enemies, saying, “It was not too late for the Union men of the nation to follow the example of the people of the South.”I’m a scholar who has written – with co-author Daniel Bellware – a history of Memorial Day. Cities and towns across America have for more than a century claimed to be the holiday’s birthplace, but we have sifted through the myths and half-truths and uncovered the authentic story of how this holiday came into being....READ More...#Passiton#memorialday #military #freedomisntfree #neverforget #veterans #civilwar #americans #americanhistory
