Beware the Misinformation!
False claims are circulating online, and they're causing quite a stir. This time, it's about a truck allegedly transporting Fano uniforms from Mekelle. But here's the truth: the image is not what it seems.
The Facebook post, with its dramatic claim, states that the truck was carrying Fano uniforms, produced by Almeda Textiles for this extremist group. However, a quick fact-check reveals a different story. The images are old and do not depict the alleged incident. Instead, they show a truck carrying illegally imported clothes, seized by the Ethiopian Federal Police in 2021, en route to Addis Ababa.
And this is where it gets interesting: the Ethiopian Federal Police and Ethiopian News Agency reported on this incident, but with a different context. The truck was intercepted with 155 tons of contraband clothing items, originating from Hosanna in the Southern Region, not Mekelle.
But wait, there's more. PesaCheck, a reputable fact-checking organization, found no credible evidence supporting the claim that Almeda Textile produced uniforms for Fano. In fact, Almeda Textile PLC was among the industries destroyed during the war in Tigray, according to reports.
So, what's the takeaway? It's crucial to approach social media posts with skepticism. PesaCheck, in partnership with Facebook and other platforms, is dedicated to separating fact from fiction. They provide the public with the tools to identify misinformation, ensuring we all stay informed accurately.
But here's where it gets controversial... Could this misinformation be a deliberate attempt to defame Almeda Textile and the TPLF? Or is it an innocent mistake? The truth may be elusive, but it's essential to question and verify. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
This fact-check is part of PesaCheck's ongoing mission to combat misinformation. The organization, co-founded by Catherine Gicheru and Justin Arenstein, is incubated by Code for Africa, aiming to empower the public to discern fact from fiction in public pronouncements, especially regarding public finances and government services.
